NINETOES VS. GREENLAND

Ninetoes wanted to follow in Leif Eriksson’s footsteps and go to Greenland, but he did not have a ticket to ride…

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh

Written by Chris Sparling

Starring Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roger Dale Floyd

Hey there, movie lovers! It is your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes HQ. Today I am taking a look at Greenland. I have popcorn in my system and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!

A comet called Clarke comes to Earth, and all hell breaks loose. Families are selected by “Presidential Alerts” to go to an airbase to be taken to an undisclosed location. The Garrity family is selected, but there is a problem; their son is a diabetic. No illnesses allowed. And this is just the beginning of the film.

As Greenland progresses, it becomes known that a nine-mile-long “Planet Killer” is on the way. This will bring about the next extinction-level event. Remember the movie Armageddon? Well, there are no astronauts and oil well drillers going to space to save us. This meteor will come, it will wipe out almost all life on Earth, there is NO escape…

…unless you can get to an American military base in Greenland.

This movie tears humanity down to its basest parts. What starts as a trip for a family to get to the airport for their “get out of certain death” free card quickly descends to an odyssey to survive as the world around them tears itself apart. The rule of law goes out the window as people start looting, fighting over the basic necessities, and armed gangs decide to flex their muscles.

The emotions in this movie run raw from the beginning. We have a husband and wife giving it another go as they recover from an affair he had nine months previously. Their son is a Type One Diabetic, and is their world. At one point, they are all separated from one another, and the desperation that both parents feel as they work their way back to one another and their son drives the tension of this movie, and is a testament to the acting abilities of Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roger Dale Floyd.

It is also a testament to the writing by Chris Sparling. He pulls no punches with this story. He takes you on a journey of ALL of your emotions, and is relentless in doing so. The story he tells is epic in scope and deserving of the big screen.

This movie is perfect for fans of “End of the World” movies, family drama, and comets.

I give this movie 4 popcorn buckets out of 5!
