Jules’ Thrilling 13 Horror Films

The assignment said ten, but Jules naturally had to go with thirteen for Spooky Season

  1. Candyman: This was the first horror movie I saw and they expected me to be terrified. Turns out, I was a weird kid who loved the guy with the hook and the bees. I asked to watch it… a lot. Tony Todd comforted me and my young brain just understood what he was about.
  1. An American Werewolf in London: I watched this behind a couch for the first time when I was supposed to be sleeping and was THRILLED. I got in trouble. Still love it. I’ll always be on the creatures side!
  1. Saw: Which one, you ask? Great question! But, let’s play a game… Something about losing all control and being put somewhere totally out of your element terrifies and thrills me. These were also the films my sister and I snuck into during every premier through four or five – The nostalgia!
  1. Nosferatu: Any and all of them. I love the idea of an old school vampire. The ghoul. That foul demon looking for flesh. Although the newest one is cinematically beautiful, the original 1922 film is still a favorite I delve into often. I even have a special release copy where Type O Negative plays over the film.
  1. Army of Darkness: We all love Ash… and this one just gets me with the chainsaw arm…. The boomstick… If that spoiled anything for you, the film is older than me… and it is on the poster. Go watch it already. It is hilarious and entertaining. He goes up against an army of undead.
  1. Gremlins: I am obsessed with a good creature feature… This movie is by no means good in the traditional sense, but I love it. The little beasts are feral, hilarious, and all shenanigans. We watch it around the holidays every year and I one day hope to own a Mogwai.
  1. Jennifer’s Body: This one doesn’t get the love it deserves, but has become a cult classic. FINALLY. Being a teen girl sucks enough, now add becoming a succubus to that? No thanks. Well, I mean… If I got to eat the people who annoyed me… Never mind. Let’s not go down that rabbit hole.
  1. Alien: There is an orange cat, a badass woman, and extraterrestrials. Honestly, something about being trapped in space with something trying to to kill you is just next level. Also, the face huggers. I get actual heebie jeebies with those guys.
  1. The Silence of the Lambs: Hannibal and Buffalo Bill are both just some straight up wild guys. Also, the fact that someone almost feels like a friend of a serial killer? There is a lot to unpack. It is also one of my favorite books.
  1. The Host: This is a Korean film that my daughter just watched for the first time! Another fun creature feature from 2006 about what happens when we FAFO. Also, stop with the pollution – we only have one planet.
  1. Sinners: This one blew me away. Cinematography. Music. Performance. I can’t put it on just a top 10 because it’s just not fair for any other movie. The historical significance and the current relevance this movie serves earns a permanent place on my list.
  1. American Psycho: This feminist film roasting all the narcissistic mansplainers is iconic. I love the performance, and I love how many people miss the damn point. It makes my heart even happier knowing the screen play was written by a woman and the book by a queer man.
  1. Shaun of the Dead: I love horror comedy. I’m sure you’ve figured that out. This film is witty and still makes me belly laugh. Unpopular opinion incoming: I don’t like zombies, but funny zombies with a romantic comedy twist are great.
