Savory Spellcraft

Liz Ramos, under the supervision of Brigid the cat, shares how your favorite fall foods are magic in a mug…

Greetings witches! As we get into the holiday season that starts from Halloween and rolls up into the New Year, it’s a great time to dive back into some kitchen witchery. Pumpkin rolls, Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas cookies, pernil… all of it is at the center of our conversations when we talk about the holidays. While it is always our intention and love/energy that makes or breaks the dishes, the ingredients are just as important.

Starting off with our Halloween/Thanksgiving crossover foods, pumpkin is a food that is versatile in cooking. Used in soups and stews, baked and eaten with savory herbs and spices, or used to make sweet treats and drinks, pumpkins pack a punch in your spellcraft. Pumpkins represent fertility with their large, round shape, and can be used in fertility magic for families wanting to grow their numbers. If you do not want children, then you can alchemize fertility into abundance/prosperity magic and “give birth” to new opportunities and income streams. Pumpkin is also a great base to other spells when combined with other herbs and spices (check out my Basic Witch article from Fall 2025 to learn all about the magical power pumpkin spice actually has – you’ll be amazed).

When working with herbs, thyme is a wonderful fall roast bird flavor. Thyme is magically linked to clearing energy, boosting inner strength, and connecting to spirit realms. Rosemary, also used in herbal bouquets for the bird, has many metaphysical properties. Protection and warding, purification and cleansing, remembrance and veneration of the dead, love, and intuition. While sage also is used for protection/warding and cleansing, it also can aid in prosperity and luck or emotional healing workings. When looking at Thanksgiving as a family gathering of all generations together to celebrate and remember lost ones, these herbs  make sense that they would be used in kitchen and ancestral magic practices. This is a holiday where we are thankful we are all able to gather together and for our blessings, and a preparation for the upcoming Christmas season (where we definitely want to be prosperous and have a cleansed, high energy home).

While all of our cuisines may be different from our cultural backgrounds, may your holiday meals be full of magic and manifestation. Blessed be!
