Hey there, book lovers! It’s your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes Loves Books Headquarters. Today, I am looking at Todd Sullivan’s Butchers. I have coffee in my system and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!

I did not know what I was getting into when I got this book. The cover gives it a cyberpunk feel; just look at the bright colors in the background with a metropolitan look, and you can see where my mind was going with that. The one thing this book is not is a cyberpunk novel. This is horror. A raw and brutal vampire novel set in Korea.

Sey-Mi is a high school student, and she is involved with an older man. They have spent a lot of time together, and he is cultivating their relationship for his own needs. That is, before Sey-Mi is kidnapped. Now, she is being held in a basement, and a group known as the Gwanlyo wants her to join their organization. To do so, she must agree to become a vampire. If she refuses, she dies. If she agrees, she must give up her family and friends. Either way, her life as she knows it is over.

This book is not for the squeamish. Mr. Sullivan pulls no punches when it comes to torture, blood, goo, guts, and gore. Now, this is not gratuitous by any means. It all fits the story and helps set up the world populated by well-thought-out characters. There were some characters I cheered for, and some I absolutely detested, and therein lies the true magic of this book. The writing is sharp and fluid. The pace is consistent throughout the book, and there is no lag. Once you jump in, you are in until the end.

This book can easily be finished in one sitting (I believe it took me three hours all totaled), so if you have plans when you start, make sure you have some free time to finish. Trust me, you will want to finish this book!

I did encounter a couple of formatting errors, but those are negligible in the overall satisfaction of reading this book. It is left wide open for a sequel, so I am hoping that comes to fruition.

All in all, I give this book 4.5 bookmarks out of 5!

Until the next time, I bid you happy reading!
