Hey there, book lovers! It’s your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes Loves Books Headquarters. Today, I am looking at Midnight Spider-Man #1. I have coffee in my system and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!

I was introduced to Spider-Man in 1971. I was in the hospital, and Dad brought in a stack of comics (six of them, but to a six-year-old, it was a stack), and on top was The Amazing Spider-Man. It was instant love at first sight! The costume, the wall-crawling, the web-slinging- I was down for it! Fast forward 5+decades and now, my favorite “Web Head” is being reinvented.

We all know the story: Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider, and he gains amazing power. He has to learn, “With great power comes great responsibility.” But now, things have changed in many ways, and for the worse. For instance, now the lesson is “Power makes monsters, every time. And monsters do what they do.”

Peter Parker is still a science genius. So much so that he gets on the radar of the ominous Oscorp, and he is being recruited by their talent agent, Felicia Hardy. She is all business, and not in a fun way. Peter may be the very key to unlocking Oscorp’s greatest project, immortality, if it does not kill him first!

The story for the first issue is well written and gives the right amount of mystery to drive the reader to the final page. Any fan of Spider-Man will see subtle but necessary differences to give us a darker imagining of the Spider-Man origin story.

The art is borderline manga style with brilliant colors and darker shadows. This does not take away from the book. In fact, it adds to it. You cannot reveal the darkness without the light, and when the darkness is revealed, it is a total gut punch.

This is Marvel’s answer to DC Comics’ “Absolute” universe, and it works! If you are a Spider-Man fan, you will love this book! If you are a fan of great art and storytelling, you will love this book. This one is a must-get!

Until the next time, I bid you happy reading!
