This story from Candace Nola reminds me of why I don’t believe I could work in the veterinary field in any capacity. It would be greatly rewarding to be able to save the lives of pets and see the gratitude and relief in the eyes of loving owners, for sure. The other side of that would be all the times I would come out of an evaluation, knowing that there’s nothing I can do, and having to share that bad news with someone who will be utterly devastated. Worse than that—by far—all the times a veterinarian is likely to discover signs of abuse and neglect, whether they’re face-to-face with the owner or not.

What would you do, if you knew someone was hurting their animal(s), but the law provided you with no recourse? Sometimes it’s the human animal that’s the most bestial of all, but also the most careful and cautious to avoid being caught. Maybe, with the right training, their bad behavior could be curbed, but maybe they’re too far gone, and the only option is to put them down.

I think many of us would—at the very least—daydream about doing what the titular vet has taken it upon herself to do in this book. I don’t think most of us would go to the lengths she has, but there’s certainly something satisfying about imagining it.

If you’re an animal lover—and not in the sense that the FBI has been recently focused on—this book is both great and terrible. If you’re particularly sensitive to harm done to animals, this one might be a bit too much, despite Nola not dedicating too much time to detailing and depicting that sort of thing. If you can handle being forced to think about people hurting animals, knowing that they’ll get what’s coming to them in the end, then you’re in for a treat.
