Hey there, book lovers! It’s your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes Loves Books Headquarters. Today, I am looking at Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. I have coffee in my system and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!

Okay, the first order of business is this: if you expect to go cover-to-cover and it will be just like the movie, you are out of luck. Is this a bad thing? Not in the least. The best way I can put it is that this book is set up like Quentin Tarantino set up the movie Pulp Fiction. It fires all over the place, and this is a good thing. Especially since I am a fan of the movie this book is from.

I did not know what to expect going into this one. What I got was so much more. More of everything that went on in the movie. Let me give you some examples: We see how Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth met, and it was NOT love at first sight; we saw just what happened to Cliff’s wife; we also see Cliff Booth as an all-American hero in World War II, we got the lowdown on Rick’s career; we see how Sharon Tate made it to Hollywood; and we get lots and lots of Hollywood history.

This is a book a fan of the movie will absolutely devour, and I do mean devour with a capital D. Everything in this book fascinated me, and what was more interesting is that it is not full of blood, guts, and violence. It is a history lesson of the characters and the setting, and it is not boring at all. This is one of the more engaging books I have read in a long while.

All of the characters were fleshed out nicely. The writing was consistent, as was the pace. That being said, this book is not perfect. Some parts become repetitious to the point that I had to check my page count to make sure my e-reader was not on the fritz. It definitely had the vibe of “I was here before.”

All in all, I enjoyed the book. I would recommend it to anyone who might be interested. It is perfect for fans of the movie and Hollywood History.
