Logan previews our own Ian Gielen’s forthcoming SAVAGE WATERS, coming in August. Is it worth the wait?

Sometimes we find ourselves in places we have never been, flying into a darkened wood full of danger where monsters beyond our comprehension exist. We go down under today as we look at our own Ian Gielen and his upcoming novella Savage Waters; releasing August 7^th, is a fantastic Creature feature. Don’t let its small size deter you, this is a heck of an immersive read that packs a punch.

Ian brought out the big guns with this one. From lush descriptions of the terrain to the incredible high stakes thrill ride against what is supposed to be myth. The writing is brilliantly done. The descriptions make you feel as if you are there in the moment, with all of the characters. Each of which are very realistic, and make you feel as if you know them. You care about their plights, and their adventure to find the dreaded cryptid.

What I think is most well done is the use of a dual timeline, done in two parts. Part One feels more like a military thriller than straight horror. A group of contracted mercenaries are sent to investigate the disappearances in the area. Riley is the newest member of this team, and has big shoes to fill, but he didn’t expect that the supernatural would be involved, because Cryptids can’t exist right? Yet they do, and his team pays for it in all its bloody glory.

Part Two has us follow two cryptozoologists who just got back from a trip searching for a mythic monster of some sort. They get an email mentioning Australia, and possible sightings of a Bunyip. They decided it would be the perfect subject for their next documentary. Believing the email, they go out in search of the thing. As always happens in horror things go wrong.

What is incredible is you sit and wonder when we will get back to Riley? And eventually the timelines come crashing together in a phenomenal conclusion. With an ending that will have you excited for the next of the series

I think this is the best of Ian’s work so far, raw visceral, and unflinching. With characters you will love, and root for. I look forward to the rest of the series from this shining star in the indie horror community.

The silence becomes unsettling as I turn to leave. A roar echoes through the darkness, forcing me to run. The underbrush lashes at me, something slams into my knees, and I fall to the ground. Five bodies and various states of dismemberment.  Their cold eyes stare up at me, as something slices into the darkness. My blood leaves me, and I’m gone.
