I don’t read many anthologies. This isn’t because I don’t enjoy short stories. I do. I just simply have trouble connecting with so many different tales. Of course, a few weeks ago I did a review of a Need, which was fantastic. See that review if you want to know more.
Anyway, this Anthology ripped my heart out in so many different ways. It is depraved, visceral, and off-putting. I mean this in the best way. Evil Little Fucks edited by Steven Pajak and R.E.Sargent, explores innocence in a way that is gruesome and terrifying.
Children are supposed to be innocent, unmoving beacons of goodness, no evil residing in their little hearts. But…what if that wasn’t the case. Within this Anthology you will find a carefully selected set of stories that show the evil in the innocent, and the dichotomy that comes from this juxtaposition will not just break your heart but haunt you.
These stories come from the likes of John Durgin, Candace Nola, Megan Stockton, Jeff Strand, and our very own Lisa Vasquez. Among many others, all of them leave a cut.
Lisa’s story “Rebirth of Hope” is a cyclical tale of a parent’s desire to return their child to life at any cost. This one being an A.I. chip to the brain, and the consequences you won’t believe. This stabs your heart and will leave you thinking about what you will do for those you love.
John Durgin’s “Never Leave” is a reimagining of Peter Pan that is very unique, and unsettling. When you go to the Never, you might not return.
Candace Nola’s “The Crab Apple Game.” Goes from a fun children’s game, to a dark evil story of a child out for blood. It is depraved, and so unsettling. Unique and visceral, it will make you question what you think you know about your children.
Megan Stockton’s “The Drop Off.” Starts with a bang and simply gets worse the further into the story you go. Well written and will make you wonder who or what Seth is.
Brian Asman’s “Beware the Hurlyburly” will mess with your mind and have you questioning reality. When a creepypasta leads to a brutal murder, poor Wesley knows he was being stalked, and he will do anything to protect himself and his friends. The worst part is you never truly know if the Hurleyburly is real, but one thing is for sure, Wesley believes.
Each of these stories hit with a punch that isn’t easy to swallow. It will hurt your heart and make you scream. Evil Little Fucks is a collection you don’t want to miss. On top of that, there is a beautiful special edition of this collection available now from Sinister Smile Press. For seventy-five dollars you can have one of only one-hundred copies, or you can get it on amazon in all formats but audio.
