Deity 101: Hekate

Liz Ramos, under the supervision of Beau & Maggie, shares ways to honor the Goddess Hekate.

Greetings witches! You’ve asked, and I listened – by popular demand, this week we dive into divine worship of Hekate! I myself am feeling the call of the Goddess, and while I am familiar with her attributes and workings on a beginners level, I am excited to be connecting with her and working with her to further my practice and path with the aid of her torch light.

Hekate has dominion over several areas, but most notably are the crossroads, moon, witchcraft, earth, sea, sky, underworld, universe, and the unknown transitional liminal spaces. She lights the way forward with her double torches and black dogs – but she will not do the inner work and soul searching for you. She will guide and teach through experience and intuition, giving advice and knowledge when you are truly ready for it.

One of the symbols of Hekate is the key. Her keys are to hidden knowledge, doorways between the seen and unseen, gates to the underworld, transitions, physical thresholds, and her position as the Keeper of the Universe Keys. Ways to incorporate keys into your workings with the Goddess include keeping keys on your altar (especially older skeleton keys), getting a key tattoo, meditating with keys, or getting jewelry made with/inspired by keys. You can also anoint and bless your home or apartment keys to protect your space.

If you are an animal lover, one of the best ways to honor Hekate is to volunteer and support your local animal shelter, especially focusing on dogs (but all animals are appreciated in these workings). Take them for walks, make special holiday meals or treats, deliver toys, play in the play yard, or even spend time in the inner rooms with the couches to snuggle and decompress. If you can’t give time, monetary donations are also accepted. Better still, go in and adopt your new best friend(s)!

Color associations for Hekate include black, red, purple, and white. These represent mystery and unknown, torch fire and spaces between worlds, magic, and protection and connection to the higher self. Hang keys with colored ribbons, use pillar novena candles, make artwork, or meditate and call in these colors as you search for truth and knowledge.

However you practice, may your way be illuminated and you find the keys to the inner knowing and magic you seek. Blessed be!
