Hey there, book lovers! It’s your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes Loves Books Headquarters. Today, I am looking at Boris Bacic’s The Thing That Followed You Home. I have coffee in my system and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!

Ethan and Ava are a happily married couple. Both are set in their careers. Both are very much in love. Ava goes on a vacation with her best friend, Sophia, and she does not come back the same. Something came back with her. Something dark, and it is quite literally driving her crazy.

Okay, I just glossed over the book, because I do not want to give it away. Really, I can talk about this book for days. Every time I think of it, something new hits me!

This book is many things: it is a horror, a psychological thriller, a love story, a haunted house story, a mystery, but at its very core, it is a book about grief. Ethan is mourning his wife, and he is not dealing with her loss well at all. Anyone who has experienced this level of grief will associate with the hero in a heartbeat. We get glimpses of the story in several phases: The now, what happened before, Ava’s journal, and Dr. Davis’ notes on Ethan’s sessions. Mr. Bacic weaved these elements like a master craftsman and gave me one hell of a reading experience!

Boris Bacic mastered all of the voices in this book. It is rich in detail and thought-provoking. It made me look at how I handled grief in my life, and sometimes the madness that followed, and believe me, there were times in my life where I thought I would not come back (the loss of my mother comes to mind). As I read, I heard the various characters in their voice as if I were right there beside them.

The book came alive in my imagination like a movie on the screen. The descriptive detail that Mr. Bacic gives is exceptional, to say the least. Some things will thrill you, and some things that will unsettle you, all to give an exceptional cinematic experience for the imagination. I have to be honest, my mind was starved for this kind of experience. This book just soaked right in and smashed play!

I have to warn you: if you have experienced any sort of loss of a loved one, this book is going to punch you directly in the feels with the force of a professional boxer. I wish I could say I took a break to recover, but that was not possible. This book is that damn compelling! It was as if the pages were made of potato chips; I could not read just one! There were points where I was brought pretty close to tears reading this, as it related to some of the losses I had gone through in life.

This book is perfect. Oh, wait…this book is perfect for fans of family drama, psychological horror, haunted houses, and great writing.

I give this one 5 bookmarks out of 5!

Until the next time, I bid you happy reading!
