Hey there, book lovers! It’s your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes Loves Books Headquarters. Today, I am looking at Jeremy Robinson’s Project Nemesis. I have coffee in my system and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!
When I was a kid, I LOVED monster movies (shoot, I still love them)! You know, King Kong, Godzilla, Gamera, Mothra, etc. When “Pacific Rim” came out in 2013, there was a resurgence in the KAIJU genre. To my delight, a bunch of KAIJU books were released.
In Project Nemesis (A Kaiju Thriller), Jeremy Robinson gives us an opening salvo in a seven-book series*.

Jon Hudson thinks his job is a joke. He works for the Department of Homeland Security in “Fusion Center-Paranormal”. He thinks his job is a joke. Most of his colleagues think his job is a joke. Most of his time is spent chasing down possible “Bigfoot” sightings. It is such a sighting that brings him to the mountains of Maine, and what he finds goes far beyond Bigfoot. Now his job is not so much of a joke as it is a fight for survival. He and a local sheriff come across a monster unlike anything anyone has ever encountered. The monster is hungry, growing, and evolving. It will take everything Jon knows about monsters to defeat this new threat and, in the process, save the East Coast of New England. The problem is that Jon does not know that much.
This book is not great, but at the same time it is not that bad either. As thrillers go, it is okay. Sure, there are white-knuckle parts of the book, but those moments are fleeting at best and become repetitive. It basically becomes: “There’s the monster, shoot the monster, chase the monster, oh God it is here, duck, and repeat” to the point of becoming silly. One other point of contention for me was the name: at some points it is Maigo (the girl that becomes the monster) and Nemesis (the name found where the monster was created).

As I stated, there are points of excitement. When the monster eats people, you get to see their journey down to the stomach, and they are still aware enough to know where they are. Some of the chase scenes in which the monster is chasing the heroes are white knuckle, by the skin of their teeth escapes. I would have to say that for me, the most exciting part of this book is the initial encounter with a mama bear and her two cubs. Yes, I said bear, not monster.
All in all, this book is okay. I give it 3.5 bookmarks out of 5.
The books in the series are: Project Nemesis, Project Maigo, Project 731, Project Hyperion, Project Legion, Island 731, and The Divide.
