A brief synopsis: Ricky has escaped a botched bank robbery with the police and fellow thieves on his heels, bullets flying. Ricky breaks into a random door in an alley and finds himself in the Backrooms. As Ricky realizes that the Backrooms are now his prison. He begins to question his life, his true motivations, and how he can best spend his time wandering the endless expanse of yellow walls, beige carpeting, and humming fluorescent lights. When Minotaur eventually makes his presence known, Ricky discovers things about himself which lead him to think he was brought to the Backrooms for a reason: to be tormented for his behavior. Ricky has an epiphany: he has no one to blame except for himself. But, has he realized this in time? Is there any way he can help others from where he is? Are the Backrooms even real?
“Minotaur” is a story of redemption. Ricky has not led a good life. He is consumed by selfishness, bitterness, and greed. He takes out his bitterness on those around him, particularly his younger brother because he blames him for marrying the woman he loved. Ricky is a career criminal, always looking out for his own interests. Though the heist did not go as planned and someone on the inside alerted the police, Ricky still managed to escape with their entire cash prize, “mine” as Ricky often says.
Wandering endless ingredients through the Backrooms, where time means nothing, Ricky is forced to confront these truths about himself before he is ready to face Minotaur.
So, who or what is Minotaur? Everything and nothing all at once. Minotaur is “the opposite of a thing”, a moving black hole, a living abyss that would swallow itself whole if it could, filled with the screams of the billions who fell into its dark depths. Minotaur suffers like no other and will never stop chasing Ricky.
Can Ricky find a way to outsmart the abyss? Can he destroy the Backrooms and thus destroy the Minotaur as well? Read and find out! “Minotaur” is fast-paced and very entertaining. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
