Hey there, book lovers! It’s your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes Loves Books Headquarters. Today, I am looking at John Scalzi’s The Kaiju Preservation Society. I have coffee in my system and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!

I have been in love with kaiju movies since I was a kid; I did not know they were called kaiju back then. I called them GODZILLA, GAMERA, KING GIDORAH, etc. When the movie Pacific Rim came out, the term KAIJU caught on. I am always on the hunt for kaiju-related books, and I found a doozy in the works of John Scalzi.

Jamie Gray is an executive with a food delivery app company, until he isn’t. He soon finds himself busted down in rank to delivery driver, and in a stroke of luck, runs into an acquaintance who tells him of a job he might be best suited for with a company called KPS. He goes home to his roommates, does the math, and unless someone does something soon, they will ALL be out on the street! He calls his acquaintance and accepts the job, and the adventure of a lifetime is waiting for him. He discovers that KPS stands for Kaiju Preservation Society. Then he sees his first kaiju. Then he discovers he is the right man for the job. After all, his job is lifting things. How hard can that be?

This book is a lot like watching Jurassic Park for the first time. You know the movie is about dinosaurs, but until you see them, you are not really prepared for them. The same thing goes for this book. You know you will be treated to larger-than-life monsters, but until you actually see it, you realize you are not prepared for the larger-than-life monsters.

The running undercurrent of this book is corporate greed. Even though the KPS relies on donors, you know that corporate greed is at the heart. It starts with corporate greed, and the seed is planted there. As you get more into the book, and you are where the monsters are, you know the bigger monster is…(class?)…CORPORATE GREED!

This book is also filled with heart. Everyone who works with these gigantic beasts is there because they genuinely care about these giants. It is in the title…PRESERVATION. From the top-grade scientists to the cafeteria workers to the janitors, everyone cares about the beasts.

There are moments of levity, fear, and action that blend perfectly to deliver a fun read. Personally, I am hoping for a sequel. Yes, it was so damn good, I WANT MORE!!!!

This book is perfect for fans of Godzilla, Gamera, King Kong, and Pacific Rim.

I give this book 5 bookmarks out of 5!

Until the next time, I bid you happy reading!
