Liz Ramos (under the supervision of Bluey the cat’s spirit) supports you in planning the perfect Mother’s Day for the most special witch in your life.
Greetings Witches! As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s time we really connect with that mother archetype and nurture the special life givers in our lives. I’d like to take a moment here to acknowledge that not everyone is on good terms with their Moms – that’s ok. If you have an aunt, sister, best friend, neighbor, grandmother, or whoever you want to honor instead, then by all means pamper them instead.
Historically, Mother’s Day was not an ancient celebration. Instead, Mother Archetype deities were honored in spring festivals (think Beltane and Ostara to honor rebirth and fertility – these themes were carried out throughout the season). The first American Mother’s Day was not celebrated until 1908, when a West Virginian Methodist Church led a service honoring mothers. It was not a recognized holiday until 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson declared the 2nd Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. If you plan to connect to past celebrations, honor your Mother Deities by leaving offerings and petitions with them and make traditional celebratory foods. Share with your favorite witch and celebrate them in your practice as well.

If you are able to, invite your witch out into nature – after all, what better way to honor the sacred mother than to enjoy Mother Earth/Gaia herself!? Visit a greenhouse and grab flowers or garden vegetables, go crystal mining, or take a nature walk. Take time to thank Gaia for all the earthly gifts she provides, and pour her a glass of wine or tea. If you cannot be in nature where you are, nature-based gifts are also a wonderful way to incorporate Gaia into your day. Crystal or bone jewelry, pressed flower gifts, floral waters, or tea sachets make wonderful nature-based gifts.
Sticking with the creation aspect of the Mother, making a homemade gift or experience is also a great way to honor your witch. Self-care sprays, herbal bath teas, candles, decorated photo frames, spell jars, besoms, soaps, or any other items are all great gifts. It is all about the effort and time put into it, and spending time to enjoy them that matters most. If you aren’t crafty, pick up some of the daily tasks and duties and provide a day of being provided for and pampered instead.
However you celebrate, give your witch the greatest gift of all – your time and love. Happy Mother’s Day and Blessed Be.
