True Crime Friday: Tammy Mahoney

Ninetoes goes into blog manager Tom’s backyard for the Tammy Mahoney case!

Hey there, true crime lovers! It is your favorite investigator, Ninetoes, and I am on the beat with The Tammy Mahoney Case. I have my notebook in hand and coffee in my system, so let’s get to it!

This is one of New York State’s oldest cold cases. Tammy Mahoney has been missing since May 8, 1981. At the time of her disappearance, she was living with her boyfriend, Karl Lockwood, in the 100 block of Lennox Avenue in Oneida, New York. The couple had planned on moving out of their apartment, and she left behind all of her packed belongings.

Ms. Mahoney was last seen hitchhiking around 7:45 a.m. near the Glenwood Springs Shopping Center on Route 46 in Oneida. She had planned to travel to Hamilton, NY, later that evening. Lockwood reported her missing three days later. She had gone missing before for several days on end, but she always returned. The longest she had been away was eighteen days.

Before she went missing, Tammy was employed as a groomer at Vernon Downs. She quit her job a week before, but did not tell anyone, and she would leave her home each morning as if she were going to work. She applied for another job at the Oneida Daily Dispatch. She stated on her application that the reason she left her other job was that it was too far to travel to work, and she would often have to hitchhike in to work if friends were not available to give her a ride.

Authorities believe that Ms. Mahoney was picked up by a group of unidentified young men and was given a ride to the Oneida Indian Nation Territory. This area covered 32 acres of land along Route 46.

It is believed that she was gang-raped and murdered while at a party on the Oneida Indian Nation Territory. Authorities claim that there were dozens of witnesses in the trailer at the time of her murder, and they have identified several male suspects, but have not publicly released their names. Not all of the suspects are members of the Oneida Indian Nation.

In March 2002, someone wrote a message and the names of two suspects on a reward flyer in A Guy, A Girl, and a Laundromat. Authorities made a public plea for photos of the area as well as any information for junked vehicles in 1981. It is believed that her body was dumped in one of those vehicles. In June 2002, they searched a gravel-covered lot near the Shako:wi Cultural Center.

Tammy Mahoney’s body has not yet been found.

Until the next time, I bid you happy investigating.
