Hey there, book lovers! It’s your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes Loves Books Headquarters. Today, I look at Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo. I have coffee in my system and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!
Okay, the rumors are true, the DC Universe is in upheaval! Like major UPHEAVAL!!! Dogs are cats, right is wrong, up is down, and the animals are running the farm! Let me tell you from the jump that this most definitely is NOT your father’s Batman!
Here’s the skinny: Bruce Wayne is broke, his parents are alive, and Alfred Pennyworth is an operative. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. The DC Universe has gone “Absolute” so you are going to see your favorite heroes in a different light…a VERY different light. Batman is showing just how different your favorite characters are going to be, and from the chatter on the interwebs, it is going to be here for a long while, so we better get used to it…
…and I am!
Oh, Scott Snyder has a hit on his hands. Coupled with the artwork of Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin, this series is going to be a massive hit, long may it reign! I am in love with this book, and I have already pre-ordered the second volume that comes out in February!
What is great is that Batman still has some gadgets. You may have noticed from the cover that his “Bat Symbol” on his chest has changed. That’s because it doubles as a blade for a two-headed battle axe! Ol’ Bats pulls a handle out, attaches the blade, and lops off a villain’s hand!
Another refreshing change is that Bruce Wayne is totally buffed up in a boxer’s way. So buffed that he destroys punching bags, and he has to pay the clean-up and refill fee.
But the more things change, the more they stay the same. Batman still looks for justice. He still figures out mysteries. He is still the hero we all know and love.
The best part? He is here to stay.
I give this book 5 BAT SYMBOLS out of 5!
Happy Reading!
