Hey there, comic book/graphic novel lovers! It’s your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes HQ. Today, I am looking at… I have coffee in my system and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!!!
I am a fan of a publisher, and that publisher is Hard Case Crime Books, a subsidiary of Titan Books. They deal in the darker side of mystery and noir, bringing back some of the old classics as well as giving up new ones. Well, you can imagine how elated I was when I found out they broke into the field of Graphic Novels. Be still, my noir-loving heart! Well, I decided to dive into the first one I came across, Gun Honey volume 1.
Meet Joanna Tan. She is drop-dead gorgeous and has the unique talent of getting a gun into any place the client requires. Rumor has it she got a taser into the Vatican! One of her employers requires her to get a gun into a maximum security prison, and it is used to kill a dozen guards, allowing a dangerous man to escape. Now, the United States Government is pressuring her to find the man who escaped and bring him down for good. Does she want the job? Hell no! Can she get out of doing it? Nope. Will she be allowed to go free when she is done? Only time will tell.
This one moved fast. Like lightning fast with a thunderbolt chaser. The story is dark, deadly, dangerous, and beautiful, all rolled into one. Charles Ardai (co-founder of Hard Case Crime) puts his love of noir to the test with this one and passes with flying colors. The artwork by Ang Hor Keng is absolutely breathtaking. The use of colors in certain situations only drives the point home, and it made me want more. Thankfully, there are a few more books in the series.
Gun Honey is perfect for fans of noir, fast action, a fast read, and beautiful art.
I give this one 5+ splash pages out of 5!
Happy Reading!
