Elizabeth Ramos, under the Supervision of Lochlann the cat, talks about the sun and its importance to witchcraft.
While most people think of witches and witchcraft is this dark, nighttime practice done by night owls, many witches identify as Solar Witches. Solar witches are those who have honed their craft to harness the powers of the Sun, and their workings reflect around attributes associated with it.
Solar witches enjoy soaking up the sun, harnessing the rays, and sharing the light within. Solar magic includes healing, purification, positivity, and banishment of negative energies – are we surprised considering a nice sunny spring/fall day does wonders to our psyche? I think not!
When working with these energies, it is important to note that while many solar witches prefer to do their workings directly out under the sunlight, it is not necessary. Symbols like painted suns or sunflowers also represent the sun and can be a substitute indoors on dark and gloomy days.
Solar witchcraft can include rituals like making sun tea, painting garden rocks with runes or other symbols, mining for crystals/cleansing crystals in the sunlight, making sun/solar water (like moon water, but with the sun..), foraging for herbs used in healing remedies, sun bathing, positive energy/negative energy banishment rituals, etc. Growing up, we made sun tea and went out into the driveway on the run-a-crush from the local quartz quarry to find any quartz that may have been broken up from the tires or rinsed clean after a good rainstorm. I still take time to go find quartz sometimes when I visit family in the summer!
If you have not made sun tea before, I highly recommend it! Call me crazy, but I can taste the healing energy of the sun in the brew itself. Hanging out with friends and family on a porch in the late evening with a glass of iced sun tea and background music is simply soul healing. To make sun tea, simply take a large jar or pitcher, fill it with water, and stick your favorite loose or bagged tea inside in the morning when the sun is coming up. Let it sit in the sun and soak the rays up for several hours (minimum 3-4, but you may want to test the strength before bringing it inside. The longer the better since it’s not being boiled!). Once the tea is to your desired strength remove the bag/leaves and enjoy over ice! Add lemon or sugar if desired. I like a good raspberry or lemon tea for that perfect summer vibe!
In the season of prolonged sunlight, why not give solar magic a try? Soak up those rays and make your own rays of magic this summer!
