Three Forks calls to you, what will you find in this debut novel by K.L. Patrick?
Having the privilege to read and review an early copy of an authors debut work is not an honor everyone can claim. Let’s start with the beginning. I met K.L. Patrick through a mutual acquaintance while we were beta reading for this individual. He and I quickly discovered we valued each others opinions and each held that “cheerleader” vibe to keep each other going. He is always checking in on others WIP and offering solutions to roadblocks.

Side note: I will not lie, he is significantly more disciplined than I am. I envy this. With a Masters in Creative Writing already under his belt, his mind is already full of what is going to come next. However, I’m not here to spoil that. He will share that in time. Ok, back to it.
Patrick has been a long-time participant in the indie horror community, cheering on others for their debuts, second, third, and so on releases. So, when he reached out to me about reading his The Disappearing of Three Forks once it was ready for early eyes, I immediately said yes.
There are several layers that made this work particularly enjoyable. Being introduced to disgraced detective, Silas Sword, being one of them. Our protagonist is thrown into what may be the magnum opus of his career. His character also brings this crime noir vibe that I really dug. Something like the detective from Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Sin City (with no salaciousness).
While this may not be for everyone, I actually really loved how Patrick switched between first and third person. STAY WITH ME. This was intentional and well utilized. It created clear boundaries between the present and the past, the now and the.. Other. I know this gets a bad wrap sometimes, but trust me. It works.
Now, we know this has some horror elements to it, but what kind? Well, for you cosmic and creature feature lovers, it’s got a little mix of both. Just when you think you have the creature figured out, you don’t. I’d actually hate to meet that thing in the wild. If there was one thing I’d wish we knew more about from Three Forks… it’s those creepy things.
If I keep rambling, I’ll end up delving into spoilers. So I’ll leave you with this: the book is available to purchase on Amazon and directly from K.L. Patrick. He’s also a really wonderful human, so if you choose to go through him, you may get to chat a little!
