Hey there, book lovers! It’s your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes Loves Books Headquarters. Today, I have my review of Universal Monsters: Dracula. I have coffee in my system and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!
I am a Universal Monsters kid. I grew up in the 1970s, and every Saturday, there was a monster movie running on two channels. Sometimes, the choice came down to a coin toss. Universal Monsters were a gateway to reading for me. My grandparents would take me and my sister to Woolworth’s, and there was a bin of books that were twenty-five cents a piece. In that bin was Frankenstein, Dracula, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, among others.
We all know the story of Dracula. He has been in our realm of consciousness for years. There have been a lot of movies and comic books about our beloved Count, and I did not think anything different or unique could be done. I was so wrong. A friend of mine sent me a copy of James Tynion IV’s Universal Monsters: Dracula graphic novel. I opened it, and my breath was taken away. The opening pages with Renfield and Dr. Seward are amazing and set the tone for the entire book. “Your blood is not mine to take” is so telling of what is to come, and the artwork by Martin Simmonds only enhances the horror.
If for nothing else, get this book for Martin Simmonds’s artwork. Oh. My. God! It is because I do not have a word more powerful, SUBLIME! I do not even know what the technical term for his art is. I tried to look it up on the internet and could find no definitive answer. In the end, it does not matter; I just sit back and enjoy it.
This book is so gorgeous that I intend to get my hands on a physical copy. Yes, it is that good!
This book is perfect for Dracula fans and people who love great art!
I give this 5 bookmarks out of 5!
