Hey there book lovers! It is your old pal, Ninetoes. Coming to you from Ninetoes Loves Books Headquarters. Today, I have for you a review of Mark Lawrence’s Prince of Thorns. I have coffee in my system, and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!
This is a “late to the party” kind of review. The reason I say this is because Mark Lawrence has seven other books to his name. After reading Prince of Thorns, I realized something. I have some catching up to do! Boy, do I have some catching up to do!
Prince of Thorns is the story of Jorg of Ancrath. When he was nine years old, tangled up in hook vines, he witnessed the murder of his brother and mother. He wants revenge, his blood boils with it!. He knows the party responsible for this travesty, and this sets in motion a series of events that will have him leading a bunch of the lands most vile criminals, before he was even thirteen years old. Let that sink in for a moment. A kid was leading adult hard case criminals! You know those guys saw some dark stuff happen for Jorg to be named their leader. Rest assured; darker acts are on their way.
Now I will be the first to admit I was skeptical about a story line where a kid leads a bunch of hard-asses in a quest for vengeance. I got burned out on the whole coming of age, getting revenge storyline. My skepticism was laid to rest. This story WORKS! I works so well that you get caught up in the quest and want to help Jorg! You not only want to read his exploits; you want to bear witness because you know there will be one hell of a story to tell if you live long enough. There were several points where I wanted to jump in and help spread the mayhem!
The story is dark. There is no getting around that, and the author pulls no punches what so ever. Just when you think “oh no, he wouldn’t go that far”, he does. Mark Lawrence has a wonderful talent to bring you to the edge, let you look over to see what awaits, then kicks you over…again and again. And you keep coming back for more!
The writing is tight and razor sharp. He does not fill the book with unnecessary words. He gets to the point, and you will hang on to every word for fear of missing out on something. The pace is fast and consistent. There really are no lag times with this one. He brings you along on a “game of thrones” that would make George R.R. Martin sit back and say “damn!”
If I had a problem with the book, is it had to end. BUT…there are two other books in the series! (Yes, I have them, so you know reviews are coming!)
I give this one 5 out of 5 bookmarks!
Oh yeah, and one hell of a bookgasm and bookhangover! Yes dear reader, it is that damn good!
