Hey there, television lovers. It is your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes HQ. Today I am looking at the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again, season two. I have coffee in my system, and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!
Mayor Fisk has cleaned up the streets of New York City, and his popularity is soaring. THAT is what the public sees. But as with everything in politics, what is going on behind the scenes? Well, Daredevil uncovers a hidden compartment on a cargo ship loaded with weapons, each more destructive than the last. Will this be enough to bring Fisk down?
When we see Daredevil in the beginning, he is wearing a black suit with the DD symbol in red. Fisk is in a total white suit. So, maybe it is true that good guys wear black… It is all-out war on masked vigilantes, with mandatory life sentences if convicted. Fisk’s AVTF (Anti-Vigilante Taks Force) is as brutal as they come. The only thing that comes close to these guys in history is Hitler’s Gestapo.
Then there is this new player, Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard) from Langley. He waltzes into Fisk’s office, gyro in hand, and it is apparent he is on Fisk’s side. He is abrasive, geeky, a “logistics” man, and he is going to be a major fly in Daredevil’s ointment, but time will tell.
The writing is exceptional. No, wait…it is sublime. It has all the feel of a dark crime drama and a superhero show rolled into one. If the first episode is any reflection of what is to come, we are in for one hell of a season! Now, I will have to say that if you are unaware of what happened in season one, you do need to go back and watch that because there are flashbacks that are necessary to know what went on with certain characters. If you are of the mind to not worry about watching season one, I highly recommend watching the podcast (also available on Disney +, and it will cue up after the episode)
The acting and direction are off the charts as well. Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, is on their “A” game. The production value of the show is worthy of a summer blockbuster movie.
One final thing about this episode…pay attention to the knife at the end. Daredevil has a very unlikely ally, and as a fan, I am VERY interested in where this goes.
Until the next time, I bid you happy viewing!
