Witchcraft Dirts

Liz Ramos, under the supervision of Nacho the cat’s spirit, helps us dig our hands into the dirty side of the craft…

Greetings witches! As we work through our Spring cleaning and refresh phases of our hearths and homes, it’s important that we also take stock of our magical tools and ingredients. As we are one with nature, dirt is a potent and powerful tool we can use in our spellcrafting. Just make sure to let the ground dry up a bit first before collecting (unless you need it sticky.. Then by all means, you do you, Boo!) As with waters, there are different types of dirts. Before you say “the ground is the ground”, hear me out – it is not the dirt/ground so much as it is the LOCATION the dirt was from that makes the difference.

Courtyard dirt is dirt collected from the courthouse. This is used in spellwork involving justice, truth, and legal matters. Please note that if you intend to collect courtyard dirt, that you probably don’t want to be on CCTV scooping out trowels full of dirt. In this case, bring a small handheld dustpan and brush, and sweep some off the sidewalk or the parking lot. This way, you can always say you dropped something small (like an eyeglass screw) and were just picking it up!

Bank dirt is used in prosperity, abundance, and financial workings, as we see banks as a symbol of status and wealth. Use this dirt in a money bowl, sprinkle in your wallet or purse, burn with some Joss Papers.. However you do these workings, add this for some extra oomph!

Churchyard dirt is great for cleansing, purification, healing, protection, relationship mending, and justice workings. And don’t worry, you do not need to be a church going person to utilize this dirt. Abandoned churches or historical ones work just as well as newer churches, though if you have ties to a specific one, feel free to use some of theirs.

Graveyard dirt is used to hex or curse, speak with the deceased, or aid in manifestation spells. It is important to note that you ALWAYS need to be respectful when collecting these dirts, as you will be taking dirt directly from a burial site. Offerings and asking permission to the spirit are MANDATORY. It is also important to note that legally there needs to be a reason and purpose for digging at someone’s grave – so an offering of flowers could be a legal and perfectly normal reason for doing so. When collecting graveyard dirt, we need to be mindful to work with a spirit that aligns with our workings: if you want prosperity, work with a banker spirit’s grave. If you wish to cause bodily harm, work with a spirit who suffered the way you intend your recipient to suffer.

There are many more dirts you can work with. Be creative and thoughtful when spell crafting – you never know what you could use in a pinch! As always, happy digging and blessed be witches!
